1/5/2024 0 Comments Wetter fresnoHigh temperatures are likely to trend downward through the 90s late this week then into the 80s this weekend around Los Angeles. ![]() The extent of the cloud cover and Kay's proximity to the coast will determine how much cooling occurs. "Most of the cooling effect in Southern California, southern Nevada and Arizona late this week and this weekend will be due to increasing cloud cover associated in part from Kay at sea and a plume of tropical moisture that is likely to spread northward on the storm's right side," AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Brett Anderson said. The other factor will be how close Tropical Storm Kay and its moisture will get to the northern part of Baja California, Mexico, before being turned westward and out to sea over the Pacific. One factor in determining the extent of the downward trend in temperature will be how much the high-pressure area weakens. This will allow a front with cooler air to slice southward from Canada, through the Northwestern states and into the central Rockies. ![]() Prior to this month, the September high-temperature mark of 100 degrees was set on multiple dates ranging from 1979 to 2020.Ī vast area of high pressure that has been parked over the interior West is likely to weaken slightly during the latter part of the week and this weekend. However, a few stand out, most notably the FEC's fabled Key West Extension. Most abandonments occurred after 1970 (over 1,700 miles) and were largely secondary or agricultural branch lines. While the FEC came to operate a very profitable regional system along the East Coast, most of Florida was served by the Atlantic Coast Line and Seaboard Air Line. The board is rather cute! It’s small, but has quite a lot crammed on to it. I figured I’d have to just buy one and find out for myself. In practice, I have read mixed reviews: some people love them, but some people decry them as the work of satan. For someone like me – who wants a choice of games in a single cab – it seems ideal. A whole load of classic titles, plus a simple menu system to allow you to choose what you want to play. In theory, these boards are a great solution. I didn’t immediately need the buttons and joysticks (my cab is already working) but I felt it was nice to have them as spares, or for a test rig. It made me feel dirty, and not in the good way – I know it’s trivial, but the thought of wanting a quick game of Frogger, turning on the cabinet and having to watch Windows boot just seems wrong. It felt like more maintenance – CPU fans, cooling fans, a hard-disc to remember to backup … nah.It felt wasteful – a complete Windows install, which you’d then never see? And the power requirements of a modern PC?. ![]() ![]() It felt like cheating – a Windows box would just be too easy. However, I felt against doing that in this case, for a number of reasons. For the majority of people it is the most convenient way of getting access to a massive collection of games. ![]() It is common in the home-arcade scene to use a Windows PC with MAME. My taste in games tends to be the older, 8-bit titles (I’m an old duffer, really) with a touch of Neo-Geo on occasion. It made sense to start by thinking about what sort of games I wanted to play. Blige, but it’s a pleasure to hear the originals in full, extended glory. Many of Remind Me’s tracks are familiar from being sampled in later songs by artists ranging from Shabba Ranks and Junior M.A.F.I.A. But sandcastles of sound emerge from the foundation, almost mythically: the snap of timbales, Rushen’s own Rhodes piano and the most glitter-packed guitar this side of Prince’s “Tambourine.” Yet the song doesn’t mind disappearing when the next wave arrives or letting go when a hip-hop producer enters stage right to take freely from its components. This 12-inch version of the track comes across as casual-mostly mid-tempo bass line and catchy vocal repetition. Check out “Feels So Real (Won’t Let Go),” which shot all the way to number two on the US R&B charts in 1984. Yet Remind Me reminds us that Rushen never played up her musical talents or attempted to come off as a musical genius: the songs seem effortless, as if they formed and grew to adulthood directly on the dance floor. To call her a polymath would be a major understatement. All of this training paid off magnificently during her Elektra years, when she would play multiple instruments (piano, synth, drums, clavinet, bass and guitar, among others), provide both lead and backing vocals, produce, arrange, conduct and write the bulk of each LP. By high school, she was composing original tunes and arranging James Brown songs for her marching band. From a young age, she learned to identify and arrange various sounds as a listener, a pianist and eventually a flautist. Rushen ended up in the music world at three, when she landed in a University of Southern California program that focused on early musical education. Across these tracks, we see an artist that developed her sound by breezily breaking genre and cultural boundaries. The collection consists of 15 highlights from the five studio albums (and companion 12-inch versions) released on Elektra during these seven years: Patrice (1978), Pizzazz (1980), Posh (1980), Straight from the Heart (1982) and Now (1984). Remind Me: The Classic Elektra Recordings 1978-1984, recently released on vinyl and CD by Strut Records, helps complicate surface understandings of Patrice Rushen’s music by accentuating her virtuosic composition process and community-centered lyrics. We can say the same about Earth, Wind & Fire, Teddy Pendergrass and Chic, for example, all artists that produced a kind of polyphonic, polished funk that often gestured back to jazz and Motown and forward to disco and club/pop music. ![]() It’s music that finds a late-night, danceable groove and lingers there by packing in layers of horn and string sections, percussion and keys. At first glance, the jazz-funk R&B of Patrice Rushen sounds a lot like the music that other black artists were producing in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s. ![]() Cook, Sean Mclaughlin Paperback, 304 Pages, Published 2018 by Hal Leonard Books ISBN-13: 978-1-5400-2482-4, ISBN: 1-5400-2482-2Īudio Production Basics With Pro Tools First (Music Pro Guides) by Frank D.
